Cell Division for Kids

Cell Division

Cell division is a biological process by which a cell divides into two or more cells. During cell division, the cell nucleus splits and the DNA is replicated. There are two types of cell division - mitosis and meiosis. In mitosis, parent cell divides into daughter cells, each with a complete copy of the genetic material of the parent and with the capability to divide again. In meiosis, after division, cells have half the genetic material of the parent, and have to undergo fertilization to form a zygote, which is capable of further division.

Cell Cycle, Mitosis and Meiosis
Grade: 6 - 12
Cell Cycle, Mitosis and Meiosis for kids - The lesson explains how the cell cycle is used to create new cells. The creation of identical diploid daughter cells, through mitosis, is described. The creation of unique haploid daughter cells, through meiosis is also described.

The Stages of Mitosis
Grade: 6 - 12
Learn about stages of Mitosis, begins with a fly-through of cells preparing to undergo mitosis (cell division). Upon entering a cell we are introduced to various organelles of the inner cell and the key events involved in mitosis. Cell division involves 7 key stages resulting in the splitting of the nucleus, and ultimately, cell division.
4:30

Mitosis Demonstration
Grade: 6 - 12
Demonstration of a diploid cell undergoing mitosis using plastic bead chromosomes.
1:55

Cell Division, Meiosis
Grade: 6 - 12
Lesson on Cell Division, Meiosis - Meiosis is the type of cell division by which germ cells (eggs and sperm) are produced. Meiosis involves a reduction in the amount of genetic material. Meiosis comprises two successive nuclear divisions with only one round of DNA replication.

Mitosis and Meiosis Simulation
Grade: 6 - 12
The author uses chromosome beads to simulate both mitosis and meiosis. A brief discussion of gamete formation is also included.

Biology Lab - Mitosis and Meiosis
Grade: 6 - 12
The lesson compares and contrasts mitosis and meiosis. It shows how you can count cells in various phases of mitosis to construct a cell cycle pie chart.
6:40

Mitosis vs. Meiosis
Grade: 6 - 12
In this lesson, mitosis and meiosis are compared in terms of DNA replication, the number of divisions, the presence of synapsis, the number of daughter cells, and the numbers of chromosomes in the products and function.
