Cell Division Stages

Interphase by biology flashcards on Flickr

The 1st stage of Cell Division.

  • Centrioles(2) move to opposite sides of the cell.
  • all the materials needed for division are made/acquired
  • Chromatin condenses into
  •           Chromsomes-it becomes shorter and thicker
    DNA Replicates
    1. DNA untwists/unzips
    2. free nucleotides move in and pair
    3. two copies of DNA are present.

Mitosis-the begining of Nuclear Division

Prophase

  • Nuclear membrane starts to break apart
  • Centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell
  • Spindle fibers start forming from the centrioles
  • Chromosomes become visible

Metaphase

  • Centrioles are on opposite sides of the cell
  • Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres
  • Chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell

Anaphase

  • Spindle fibers contract (shorten)
  • Chromosomes separate and move to opposite sides of the cell

Telophase by biology flashcards on Flickr

Telophase

  • Nuclear membrane reforms
  • Cell membrane "pinches" in
  • Cell plate on a plant cell starts to form

    Cytokinesis

    • The division of everything else in the cell.
