Plant & Animal Cells for Kids

Cell Structures

The cell is the basic functional and structural unit of life. Many organisms are single-celled like amoeba and bacteria. Rest, are multi-celled with billions and trillions of cells that make up an animal body. Cells are covered in a protective membrane. At the center of the cell is the cell nucleus which contains the genetic code (DNA). Apart from the nucleus, there are many small structures inside the cell like ribosomes, mitochondria, lysosomes etc. each performing one or more vital functions that make life possible.

Video on Cells
Grade: 5 - 12
Biology lesson for kids - Why cells are important?
3:35

A Tour of the Cell
Grade: 5 - 12
The lesson takes you on a tour of the cell. The lesson starts by explaining the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It also explains why cells are small but not infinitely small. It also explains how the organelles work together in a similar fashion.
14:15

Plant Cells
Grade: 5 - 12
Learn why plants are so amazing - discussing their evolution, and how their cells are both similar to and different from animal cells. Learn about plants, plant evolution, eukaryotic vs. prokaryotic cells, cellulose and lignin, plastids and chloroplasts, central vacuole.
10:30

Animal Cells
Grade: 5 - 12
The presentation tells us about the city of Eukaryopolis - the animal cell that is responsible for all the cool things that happen in our bodies. Learn about Robert Hooke, cilia and flagella, cell membrane, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, centrosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, nucleus, mitochondria.

What's in a Nucleus?
Grade: 8 - 12
Ever wondered exactly is inside a nucleus, one of the building blocks of every organism in the world? Learn all about the cell nucleus.
2:10

Cellular Organelles
Grade: 8 - 12
Learn about the structure and function of the major organelles in a eukaryotic cell. Chloroplasts use the energy of the sun to produce sugars. Mitochondria produce ATP through cellular respiration. Ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum and golgi complex produce and store proteins. Lysosomes breakdown waste material. Vacuole stores material in plant cells.

The Inner Life of a Cell
Grade: 8 - 12
A short animated movie showing the inner life inside a human cell. Go on a journey through the microscopic world of a cell!
8:00

Cell Biology
Grade: 8 - 12
Travel into the microscopic world of prokaryotic, eukaryotic cells, chloroplasts and mitochondria. Using sophisticated tools that peer deep into cells, cell biologists are beginning to understand the structure and function of these well organized, highly complex, chemical factories that are the building blocks of life.
17:10

Plant and Animal Cell Overview: The Basics
