Light and Optics for Kids

Light & Optics

Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye. It behaves like a particle at times and like a wave at other times. Light moves at the constant speed of about 300,000 km/sec (186,000 mi/sec) when they are in a vacuum. The light from Sun takes about seven minutes to reach Earth. And, it takes over four years for light to get to the nearest star from Sun.

Science videos  Science Videos & Lessons:  (Reviewed by K-12 teachers)

The Science of Light
Grade: 5 - 12
Find out about the light that the Sun produces, and its effects on Earth's life forms. Learn how our eyes see the light, though only a small fraction of the light spectrum. It also demonstrates how a solar eclipse takes place, how light is reflected, and its use in lasers.

The Visible Spectrum
Grade: 7 - 12
Lesson on electromagnetic spectrum.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Grade: 7 - 12
Learn about visible light and electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light would be just 1 inch on an electromagnetic scale of over 2,000 miles!

What Is Light Made Of?
Grade: 7 - 12
Ever wonder what exactly is light? What is it made out of? What makes it so fast? Find out.

Optics: Light at Work - part 1
Grade: 7 - 12
The video provides interesting information about light, optics, optical engineering and the science behind light. It explores real world applications and new technologies based on light in nanomedicine, space telescopes, invisibility, and solar energy.

Optics: Light at Work - part 2
Grade: 7 - 12
The video explores optics, and the world of light and its applications. A wide variety of young scientists share what they love about optics as they go about creating things that people need.

Grade: 7 - 12
Lesson on waves. It explains some of the key principles applying to waves.

Grade: 7 - 12
Learn about reflection and the ray model of light.

Grade: 7 - 12
Learn about refraction.

Quantum Mechanics: The Dual Nature of Light
Grade: 7 - 12
A Fermilab physicist explains the dual nature of light as waves and photons, and the principle behind photoelectric effect.

Double Slit Experiment
Grade: 7 - 12
Demonstration of double slit experiment. The wave-like properties of light were demonstrated by this famous experiment first performed by Thomas Young in the early 19th century.

Measuring Speed of Light
Grade: 7 - 12
Light is fast. Really really fast. About 186,000 miles a second. Learn how scientists go about measuring the speed of light.
