Male reproductive organs are located both inside and outside of the body.

 

Function of the male reproductive system is to fertilize the female egg

 

Male organs can be grouped into three categories:

  • Sperm production and storage.
    • takes place in the testes which are housed in the scrotum
  • Ejaculatory fluid producing
    • seminal vesicles, prostate, and the vas deferens
  • Glands depositing the sperm
    • penis, urethra, vas deferens

Major secondary sexual characteristics includes:

  • larger, more muscular
  • deepened voice
  • facial and body hair
  • broad shoulders

Important sexual hormone of males is testosterone.

Female reproductive system has two functions:

  • produce egg cells
  • protect and nourish the offspring until birth

Female reproductive system is located inside the body 

 

Female reproductive system contains three main parts:  

  • vagina, which leads to the uterus
  • uterus, which holds the developing fetus 
  • ovaries, which produce the female's eggs

.....Vagina is attached to the uterus through the cervix

.....Uterus is attached to the ovaries via the fallopian tubes

.....Approximately every 28 days, the ovaries release an egg which passes through the fallopian tube into the uterus

  • unfertilized egg:
    • lining of the uterus and unfertilized egg are shed each cycle through a process known as menstruation.
  • fertilized by sperm
    • attaches to the lining of uterus
    • fetus develops
