The egg is the first stage of butterfly life cycle. It is about the size of a pinhead. The adult lands on a flower and lays all her eggs at a time.
The larva or caterpillar is the second stage of the butterfly life cycle. When the larva first hatches usually the first thing it does is eat its eggshell.
Once the larva becomes a certain size it turns into a pupa. It hangs from a leaf or twig and forms a hard covering.
Once the pupa hatches it is then an adult butterfly. It looks amazingly different from the larva. Its wings are still wet so it hangs from the leaf/twig and dries its wings in the sun. |
