Moon for Kids


The Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth, and the second brightest object in the Earth's sky after the Sun. Its diameter is around one-fourth that of Earth and its volume is 2% that of Earth. The Moon completes an orbit around the Earth in 27.3 days in an elliptical orbit at an average distance of 384,403 km. Moon is the only celestial object to which humans have traveled and landed.

Apollo 11 Moon Landing, 1969

Launched on July 16, 1969 it carried Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above.
